West Wisconsin Avenue workgroup raising money to hire consultant

A workgroup assembled to improve West Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Milwaukee is trying to raise $400,000 to hire a consultant that will put into action the numerous plans for the area. “We have plenty of studies out there that tell us what sorts of things you have to do to revitalize an urban area,” said Milwaukee attorney Stephen Chernof, who is leading the workgroup. “We need a way to select the specific action plan that we want to do.” The stretch of West Wisconsin between the Milwaukee..... Master Lock workers energized by presidential visit

MILWAUKEE — President Obama’s visit to Master Lock in Milwaukee was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of the workers at the company.

Hundreds of Master Lock workers got the chance to see and hear the president in person Wednesday. The company was singled out as setting an example for the country by putting people back to work here in America, “insourcing” jobs to Milwaukee from China. “We’re going to create more success stories like Master Lock, and we will remind everyone in the world why the United States is the greatest nation on earth,” Obama said Wednesday.

President Obama’s words seemed to energize the workers at the lock-making plant. It was also music to the ears of interim MATC Dean Dorothy Walker.

“With a bill that hopefully will pass that you’ll be able to use those dollars to train people and get  them ready for the jobs at Master Lock and other companies creating manufacturing,” Walker said.

Milwaukee’s Master Lock prepares for a presidential visit

MILWAUKEE — The moment Master Lock was mentioned in President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, company executives had to have a sense a presidential visit was a possibility. It will be on Wednesday.

President Obama will tour the Master Lock plant and speak to workers. He’ll commend the company for bringing jobs back to this country from China.

Master Lock CEO John Heppner says he never expected the attention his company is gaining.

“Absolutely not. It’s been great to have that type of notoriety,” said Heppner. “We just wanted to deliver for our employees because they’re the ones that worked so hard to make this plant more competitive and that’s something we’ll continue through 2012 this year and again into 2013.”

Heppner says big things are planned for Master Lock in the coming years. What exactly that will be is still under lock and key.

When café owner Simon Warren lost his business on Martin Luther King Drive in 2010 due to an electrical fire, the longtime poet and coffee lover was encouraged by friends to rebuild.

“You have to open one up again,” Warren said friends told him. “They’d meet outside of the building and pray,” he added.

In July 2011, Warren purchased a two-story building, at 2035 W. Fond du Lac Ave., to reopen Sweet Black Coffee, and has since been working on renovating the space.

Bordering Lindsay Heights, Sweet Black Coffee is a 2,800-square-foot café that will offer a “pork-free” menu of coffee, bakery and deli sandwiches, including vegan sandwiches. Warren also plans to host open-mic poetry and live jazz throughout the week... Read More
