Inspectors also will look at the southern end of the building on East Kilbourn Avenue and its eastern exterior. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett wins Democratic recall primary election

MADISON (AP) — Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett won the Democratic primary Tuesday, May 8th in Wisconsin’s historic recall election, emerging from a field of three Democrats to face Republican Gov. Scott Walker next month.

Barrett’s win sets up a June 5 rematch of the 2010 governor’s race in what will be the culmination of an effort to oust the first-term Republican that officially began more than six months ago.

The recall, triggered by the collection of more than 900,000 petition signatures, was spurred by anger over Walker’s proposal passed last year taking collective bargaining rights from public workers.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker faces recall after opponents turned in hundreds of thousands of signatures in an effort to boot him from office. Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and four Republican state senators also face recall challenges.

Judicial Commission investigating 29 judges who signed recall petitions

MADISON — A nine-member judicial commission in Madison is looking at whether 29 Wisconsin judges should not have signed recall Gov. Scott Walker petitions. The panel is also looking at what, if anything, should be done about it.

Last week, Milwaukee Circuit Judge Dennis Cimpl told the court why he signed a petition and would not step aside from a case. In that case, Kevin Kavanaugh, a former Walker appointee when Walker was Milwaukee County Executive, is accused of stealing money that was supposed to go to veterans’ families.

Moody's downgraded the city's planned bond sale to Aa2 from Aa1, which keeps the rating in the high-quality, low-credit-risk category. The bond and notes sale is scheduled for April 23. The rating also affects $963 million in existing... ... Read More

Latinos disagree on redistricting map

Latino community members are divided about how the maps for the 8th and 9th state Assembly districts on the south side should be redrawn.

A map drawn by the Republican majority divided the 8th and 9th Districts down Cesar Chavez Drive. Republicans argued that by drawing the districts this way, Latinos might become the majority in both districts during the next 10 years. District boundaries are redrawn every 10 years, after the U.S. Census.

However, some community members are concerned that the proposed map would decrease the power of the Latino vote and ultimately lead to reduced representation in the legislature... Read More
