MPS finalizing 2013 budget

The Milwaukee Public Schools board of directors will vote on the district’s $1.17 billion budget in June which includes a reduction in 400 full-time equivalent positions. The 2013 budget is 1.7 percent less than the current budget, which included unprecedented cuts in MPS this year, including $66.6 million in school operations and construction funds. Concordia to offer physician assistant program

Concordia University Wisconsin will begin offering a physician assistant program in May 2013. The 26-month, full-time, year-round program is designed to prepare students to become physician assistants with an emphasis on primary care and preventative medicine. The program is applying for provisional accreditation from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant Inc. (ARC-PA) and anticipates being accredited in March 2013. Cree CEO Swoboda to chair Marquette board

Chuck Swoboda, chairman and chief executive officer of LED lighting firm Cree Inc., has been elected chairman of the Marquette University board of trustees. Swoboda, a Marquette 1989 engineering graduate, first joined the university's board in 2004 and has served as vice chair since 2011. He will replace Darren Jackson, who served his full term as chair of the board from 2009 to 2012. Jackson will remain on the university’s board of trustees. Young Scientists Club keeps kids coming back

 

Members of the Young Scientists Club were buzzing in anticipation of a field trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo for a behind-the-scenes tour of some of the exhibits. As they were preparing to leave, Darrin Madison walked through the door of the Washington Park Urban Ecology Center and a few of the young scientists ran over to greet him.

The kids lined up at the door, and then marched outside toward the buses waiting to take them to the zoo. The engines rumbled in the parking lot. Darrin helped the kids climb aboard, and got in after them. They were all smiling.

Madison joined the club four years ago when he was 10, but is now too old to attend as a student. So “I decided to come back and volunteer, because the Ecology Center is kind of like a part of my life,” he said. “I enjoy it here.”... Read More
